As many of you may be aware Dave Harney had a Heart Attack on May 28th of this year, followed by Open Heart Bypass Surgery on June 1st. Dave is now recovering at home where he is regaining his appetite and up walking around on his own. We thank everyone for their continued prayers for his recovery.
Born and raised on a farm in Kentucky, we went to church every Sunday where I sang specials in the services: religious but lost. In September of 1965 I moved to Dayton, Ohio, worked as a salesman, and married Mary, my sweetheart, on Dec. 4, 1965.
One of our new neighbors invited Mary to Faith Baptist Church for a revival, ‘pack a pew night.’ Both of us went that night and for the first time heard the true gospel and were told that religion would not get us to heaven. Although we didn’t get saved that night, we decided that there was something missing in our lives and continued to attend the services at Faith Baptist. In the spring of 1966 on a Sunday night, Mary and I went forward and asked Jesus Christ to come into our hearts. How wonderful it was to know at that moment, Jesus Christ had come into my heart and saved me from an eternity in hell.
Some time later a man by the name of Col. Jack Henry moved to the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. He started attending Faith Baptist Church and our Pastor, Bro. Charles Lynn, asked him to take over the youth department. A short time later, Bro. Henry asked Mary and me to help out in the youth department. Both of us had a true love for young people so we eagerly accepted. Early in 1968 Bro. Henry was transferred from Wright Patterson and our Bro. Lynn, asked us to take over the youth department.
The Lord began to burden me with a desire to work full time in the ministry and on the first Sunday of November, 1970 I began to work full time at Faith Baptist Church. During this full time ministry I served as Youth Pastor for 30 years. As a result of the Lord’s blessing upon our work, we have ‘young men and women’ serving the Lord all over the United States and some in foreign countries as well. As it became known: “Dave’s Kids are everywhere.”
Shortly upon beginning my full time ministry at Faith Baptist Church, I also took over the position of Music Minister. It seemed impossible at the moment that I would be doing the two things that had always meant so much to me: working with young people and music which had always been a part of my life. Throughout the years, our youth won many competitions in various musical events. I have also been blessed in working with a wonderful, God-honoring choir. One of the many joys that I have had is singing solos and singing in quartets throughout my years of service.
In the past 38 years, God has been so good to me. I could never have accomplished anything without God’s help and direction. My wife Mary has been my rock and given her complete support throughout my ministry. Mary and I have one son who is now in the ministry full time and we have two adorable grandsons.
I believe that I have the experience and knowledge that will help your church, youth, or young married couples. |
